1. Ice Breaker:

Option 1: Go to HGTV.com and look up a few "before" and "after" photos from different renovation projects (not new homes!) There are many of these type shows to choose from: Fixer Upper, Rehab Addict, Good Bones, etc. Almost all of these shows can be found on the HGTV schedule! Galleries of the transformations are also available on the show's website. Find these pictures – the more transformed the home, the better and show them to your class. (Note: if you don’t have access to a screen and a computer connection in the classroom, just print the pictures before the class begins.)

Questions:

• Do any of you watch renovation shows? Fixer Upper? Good Bones? Property Brothers?


• Do you like them? Why or why not?


• Why do you think that renovation shows are such a big hit?

Option 2: So many things are being restored today – barn wood, old signs, vintage clothing. If you have some of these types of things around your home, use them as a way to enter into a conversation about restoration.

Questions:

• Why do people like to decorate with restored items?


• Have you ever restored something? What did you fix and why?


• Does restoring old things have value to you?

Bridge: Discuss how the practice of taking old homes/items and breathing new life into them is an amazing way to value history, property, or the lives of those that first used those things. Jesus did a bit of the same thing in our Scripture today.

2. Read Scripture

Today’s Scripture is taken from Mark 5:21-43. Jesus is traveling through Capernaum and as he tries to help one person, another one seeks his help as well.

Read Mark 5:21-43

3. Discussion

• What are the common threads between the stories?


• What do you notice about how “touch” is a part of both stories? What could be significant about this?


• Why do you think the woman approached Jesus from behind? What might she have feared?


• What did the woman believe to be true about Jesus? What did Jairus believe to be true?


• How did Jesus’ touch restore life to the bleeding woman? To the little girl? To Jairus?
