There are so many ways that we might define a relationship. It might be a connection between persons by blood or marriage. It could be an emotional or nostalgic connection with people we know like teachers, students, or coworkers. The most important aspect of any relationship is that the more that we invite God into our lives, the deeper that relationship will be. This is because God is our best example of relationship. The bible says, in John 1:1 that, "in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God".

It’s amazing how Abraham put his trust in the Lord, even when he was told he had to leave his whole family and go to an unfamiliar place.

I often worry that we, as modern young adults, have not taken to heart the example of fruitful relationships shown by our spiritual forbearers. The relationship between Abraham and God is one to which we should pay special attention and one that I will always cherish. I see how Abraham loved the Lord and how that love was expressed in faith. It’s amazing how he put his trust in the Lord, even when he was told he had to leave his whole family and go to an unfamiliar place. Jacob wrestles with God deep into the night and leaves, not frustrated, but with renewed determination to be the leader God is calling him to be. What both men have in common is that their relationship with God is so strong that they are willing to trust God with their whole lives.

I’m not sure that my relationship with God is strong enough that if he asked me, “Will you go?” to go to a place where I had never been, to a place unknown and without Wi-Fi, that I would answer like Abraham. Would you? I believe it would be difficult for most of us to answer “yes.” How marvelous was for Abraham to have such relationship with God. It was this relationship that helped him form strong bonds with Lot and Abraham, and helped him become the father of a mighty nation.

I believe that the best way to have healthy relationships with others is for to us to have a healthy relationship with God, just like Abraham. When the Lord dwells in our hearts, we are able to show the same love that is found in the three-in-one. If we show the same faith, love, and hope which Christ has shown us, I know we will do amazing things.

When the Lord dwells in our hearts, we are able to show the same love that is found in the three-in-one.

1 Corinthians 1:30 says ‘God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God had made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God; we become God’s holy people and are set free.’

Let love, faith and hope cover all of our relationships. Let us be the holy people that God invites us to be.

Discussion questions:

  1. What do you think your current relationship with God is like?

  2. What can you learn about your relationship with God our spiritual forbearers like Abraham?
